Dancing
Scottish Highland Dancing : it is a very old and noble art form
which gives pleasure to both dancer and spectator alike. Developed
over centuries in the Northern Highlands, this dance style has
spread not only over the whole of the United Kingdom, but throughout
the world, particularly in Canada, the United States, Australia,
South Africa and New Zealand. Wherever they have settled, Scottish
emigrants have conserved a little of the culture of their homeland
Highland
Dancing is very important in Scottish life, and is a part of numerous
social and family occasions : festivals, marriages and so on,
to mark special occasions, and as part of concerts. It is a competitive
event also, with contests being held each weekend throughout the
year. Professional standards are sought as in all other forms
of dance, with participants searching for perfection in technique
and in performance, at regional level, and each August in the
West of Scotland where contestants from all over the world battle
for the title of World Champion.
